Our Director: H. Brent Hairston
Hello. My name is Brent Hairston and I am the current director of A Cappella Texas. I have been involved in music nearly all my life. Before I was even in kindergarten, my mother forced me to take piano lessons. I didn’t care for it much at the time, but am now so thankful for it, given the importance music plays in my life. Beginning at Bay City Junior High, I learned to play the trumpet and continued this in the Bay City High School Band, and finally in the Texas A&M University Symphonic Band. During my years at Texas A&M, I became acquainted with some folks who were involved in barbershop quartet and chorus singing. After listening to some championship quartets and choruses, I found myself amazed at the sound the pure human voice could make. I had trouble believing that the sounds I was hearing were really being produced solely by human voices. I had never sung with a quartet, chorus, or choir of any type, but quickly became hooked on barbershop quartet and chorus singing.
I have now been a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society for 24 years. I have sung in numerous quartets over the years, and I currently sing with RINGSIDE, the current 3rd place Southwestern District (SWD) quartet. For most of my 24-year membership, I have sung with the Houston Tidelanders, the current SWD champions, who will represent the SWD this summer at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Competition in Portland, Oregon. I have served as Marketing Director, Show Chairman, and was Director of the Brazos Barbershoppers in Bryan/College Station from 2003 to 2005.
One of the things I love most about barbershop harmony is that it is an art-form that is enjoyed by amateur musicians. I, like so many other amateur musicians, participate in this hobby for the sheer joy of singing. In my “real” life, I manage rental properties. As you visit with guys in the chorus, you will find engineers, lawyers, realtors, and salesmen. All of us engage in this hobby for the same reason. We LOVE to sing and entertain.
If YOU love to sing, consider joining us at our regular rehearsals Tuesday nights from 7:00PM to 9:30PM. We meet at 11400 Concordia University Dr., Building B, Room 227 on the Concordia University campus off RM 620. We would love to see you there!
